Who we are: 
This first-of-its-kind, public-private initiative aims to reduce the burden of preventable chronic disease among Austin’s most at-risk and economically disadvantaged populations. Through Stronger Austin, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Austin Public Health Department, It’s Time Texas, the Michael and Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living, and My Brother’s Keeper will significantly expand access to free programming that increases physical activity, improves diet, and fosters community engagement and development. Our approach will build on the latest science and will activate and strengthen neighborhood partnerships and places/spaces to create a stronger, more united Austin community. In addition to improving the health of Austin’s most at-risk citizens, our aim is to develop and demonstrate a cost-effective model that can be scaled to communities across Texas. 

Who we want:
Stronger Austin Interns are aspiring leaders eager to make an impact in the community. Our team of interns will work closely with the Stronger Austin team to research, develop, implement, and promote this local initiative and are responsible for assisting with projects that vary in time frame, scale, and orientation. We are seeking interns who are excited to work on a new initiative, and are eager to learn, contribute, shape, and mold the work we do. 

The purpose of this internship is not only to help improve Stronger Austin’s impact on the community, but also to provide the intern with valuable knowledge and experiences that assist in their educational and career aspirations. This internship is for individuals who are ready to contribute immediately, can learn quickly, are willing to ask questions, have adept problem solving skills, and are able to adapt well to different situations or conditions. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide logistical support to Stronger Austin team
  • Provide support in research, development, implementation, and promotion of the Stronger Austin Initiative and its components
  • Assist with developing protocol documents, evaluations, and data collection for Stronger Austin as needed
  • Assist with outreach and recruitment efforts for Stronger Austin, and build relationships with organizations and community leaders
  • Assist in the development and implementation of program trainings and presentations as needed
  • Assist with Stronger Austin and It’s Time Texas events as needed
  • Work hands on with program participants at various Stronger Austin programming sites

What you’ll bring:
  • Student working toward a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in public health, health education, exercise science, social work, marketing, communications or a related field    
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA
  • Basic knowledge of health promotion, fitness, and/or public health
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Works well independently and as part of a team
  • Creativity in problem-solving
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Basic HTML, CSS, and database management a plus, not required
  • Knowledge of health promotion theories and/or exercise science a plus, not required
  • Bilingual: Spanish & English a plus, not required

Schedule Requirements: 
  • Interns are willing to commit at least 15 hours a week to this internship
  • Interns will need to be available in evenings and/or Saturday mornings while Stronger Austin programming is occurring
  • Interns begin their term on the week of January 14th (or the week before if possible) and commit to this internship through May 18th. 
  • Attendance at mandatory New Intern Orientation
